![]() I liked gymnastics before Nadia came on the scene and was always trying to do some gymnastic skill in my back yard, such as cartwheels and back bends, but of all the gymnasts I've seen, Nadia has always been my favorite. I remember first seeing her in action on TV during the Olympics in '76. I was impressed with her excellent routines and perfect scores. I wanted to do gymnastics all the more like her but couldn't go for lessons. After that I started collecting pictures of her to draw. I had taken private art lessons since the age of 12 and I had an excellent teacher. She taught me what to look for and how to capture the spirit of the subject. When I was 17, I had to carry on my interest in art by myself since my mom couldn't afford to send me to my lessons anymore. Drawing gymnasts became my favorite thing to do (if I couldn't be a gymnast, why not draw them?) and Nadia was my "guinea pig" so to speak. I had become so familiar with her features that when I tried something new, I tried it out on a photo of Nadia first. That was my test as to whether this new media or method would work for me. Here is a collection of my best Nadia drawings I did over the years that survived along with a story of my experience about when I met my most favorite gymnast.
